A Weekend in Auvergne [Part 2]: Le Puy de Dôme

Day 2 of our weekend in Auvergne started off bright and early.  We were up and out the door before 9am to get in some more “sightseeing” before our ride back up to Paris.

This time, we headed in the direction of Le Puy de Dôme, an old volcano in the Massif Central mountain chain with a beautiful view of Auvergne.

To get to the top, you need to take a small train (or you could hike up, but it takes several hours).  I’m terrified of heights and was pretty nervous that the train would get too close to the edge but it ended up being okay.  The ride is only about 15 minutes long so I was up on the top before I knew it.

Once on top, there’s series of pathways leading to different sights like the observatory, an old temple, and a restaurant.

There were also a lot of people paragliding… So brave!

After a good hour or so at Le Puy de Dôme, we were all ready for lunch.  Edouard’s aunt & uncle drove us to a quiet spot called the Lac de Guéry.  Once a volcano, the crater that was left behind filled up with water and left a serene little lake.  It was the perfect spot for a picnic : )

Loving that sunshine

Our trip ended here.  We headed back to Paris after our meal feeling tired but satisfied from a weekend immersed in nature and filled with sun.

  1. Wow, so beautiful. Although that photo of the paraglider made me feel woozy! 😉 Looks like you had incredible weather too!
